
About Stephen A. Unsworth
Stephen A. Unsworth is the senior partner in the law firm of Unsworth & Barra, PLC located in Essex Junction, Vermont. He has over 30 years experience in Legacy Wealth Planning. Stephen directs the Legacy Wealth Planning group and devotes his practice primarily to estate planning, elder law, asset protection and business law. His mission is to provide quality estate planning resources, such as assistance with Living Trusts, Wills (simple & complex), Probate, Trust Administration, Powers of Attorney, Trusts, Medicaid and Special Needs Planning and Family Limited Partnerships.
Experience
Attorney Unsworth was recently appointed to the Board of Governors for the American Academy of Estate Planning Attorneys (AAEPA), a national membership organization serving the needs of legal professionals concentrating on estate planning. Through the Academy's comprehensive training and educational programs on state-of-the-art estate planning law and techniques, the AAEPA fosters excellence in estate planning among its members and helps them deliver the highest possible service to their clients. Stephen joins eight other attorneys from around the country on this prestigious Board, serving as an advisor who helps guide the direction of this national organization. Stephen is the only AAEPA member in Vermont.
In 2007, Stephen was named as a “Super Lawyer” in the New England Super Lawyers magazine. Nominees are chosen by their peers through extensive polling and independent research conducted by Law & Politics. Featured lawyers are considered to be the best in their professions and the attorneys named as Super Lawyers are limited to the top 5% in New England.
Stephen is admitted to practice law in both Vermont and Maine. He is a current member of the Vermont Bar Association, the Maine Bar Association the Chittenden County Bar Association, The American Academy of Estate Planning Attorneys the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys and the Vermont Bar Association’s Elder Law and Probate & Trust Sections. Attorney Unsworth has taught business law courses at the University of Vermont and Champlain College. He has been a presenter in numerous continuing legal education seminars for attorneys and paralegals in Vermont. He is a past President of the Chittenden County Bar Association. He was chairman of the Vermont Bar Association Continuing Education Committee and was awarded a certificate from the Vermont Bar Association for being an outstanding chairperson. He was co-chair of the Vermont Governor's Commission on Mobile and Manufactured Housing. Stephen was also awarded a certificate of appreciation from the Vermont Administrative Judge for his work as an Acting Judge in Small Claims Court.
Education
Stephen Unsworth graduated with distinction from the University of Maine at Orono and received his Juris Doctorate from Western New England College School of Law in Springfield, Massachusetts. Attorney Unsworth is admitted to practice law in both Vermont and Maine.
Personal
Stephen is native of Vermont, and devotes a great deal of his free time to serving his community. He is active in his church, on the Advisory Board of the Salvation Army and is the past president of the Essex Rotary Club. An avid sailor he is the past Commodore of the Lake Champlain Yacht Club. Stephen lives in Shelburne, Vermont with his wife and three children.
